Many children struggling with behavioral issues, such as autism and ADHD, were prescribed Risperdal. Risperdal was originally manufactured as an antipsychotic drug, but then marketed to physicians by the manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, for treating behavioral issues. The drug was never tested by the FDA as a medication for these conditions, but instead was intended to treat adults with schizophrenia, bipolar tendencies, and depression. Despite repeated FDA warnings, Johnson & Johnson continued to market the drug as a solution for children as well. Although Johnson & Johnson was fined $2.2 billion in order to resolve the civil and criminal charges resulting from this incident, thousands of young boys still live with the effects of this dangerous drug.
The charges brought against Johnson & Johnson uncovered that they destroyed, falsified, and hid information disclosing that Risperdal had been linked to the development of female breasts in young boys. This condition is known as gynecomastia. Thousands of cases have been filed against Johnson & Johnson for gynecomastia. Several of these cases have resulted in multi-million dollar verdicts.
Risperdal affects the body in the following ways: It alters dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain to decrease psychotic behavior. The altered dopamine and serotonin levels increase prolactin & estrogen, decreasing testosterone. The increased estrogen and prolactin triggers gynecomastia. The body develops painful, abnormal breast tissue as a result.
