Amputation

Amputation is the removal of a limb by trauma, medical illness or surgery.  In some instances, the limb has to be removed to control pain or a disease.  The loss of a limb as the result of the negligence of another is devastating.  While the physical amputation site may heal, it is susceptible to complications such as infections, blood clots and phantom limb pain, which is the feeling of body parts that are no longer there. Phantom limb pain can feel like a variety of things, such as an itch, ache, burn, tension, dry or wetness, feeling locked in or trapped, or feeling as if the missing limb is moving. There may well be psychological effects of suffering the loss of a limb, such a depression, helplessness, dependency, changes in social life and additional or new found financial problems.

The American Statistical Association reported that in the United States in 1999, there were 14,420 non-fatal traumatic amputations.  Of these, 4,435 occurred as a result of traffic and transportation accidents and 9,985 were due to labor accidents. Of all traumatic amputations, the distribution percentage is 30.75% for traffic accidents and 69.24% for labor accidents.  (American Statistical Association: Amputations in USA, 2000.)

Whether the loss of a limb is from the most common causes, namely, traffic collisions and workplace incidents with machines and equipment, or other common causes are electrical shocks, firearms and explosives, medical malpractice, dangerous drugs and dangerous medical devices, or unsafe products, it is a life altering injury.
